Moxibustion (or Moxa in short) is a technique in Chinese medicine, where the herb known as Mugwort (Artemesia vulgaris) is burnt to create the warmth in the body during the treatment. It can be used for many conditions including pain related to Women’s health (Menstrual irregularities, Dysmenorrhea), cold hands and feet, insomnia, anxiety, digestive issues, asthma and allergies and many more.
It promotes the movement of Qi and blood and warms the whole body. It is a great complimentary therapy as an add on to acupuncture treatments.
There are different types of Moxa treatments:
- Direct Moxa: Cone-shaped piece of Moxa is placed directly on the skin and burnt until it extinguishes.
- Indirect Moxa: A stick of burning moxa is placed close to, but not touching the skin. This technique reduces the chances of skin burns.
- Needle-Top Moxa: A piece of cotton-like, fluffy moxa is placed on top of an acupuncture needle administered to the body and then burnt, transferring the heat down the needle to the acupuncture point. This enhances the therapeutic effect.
- Tiger Moxa: An incense stick-shaped moxa is inserted into a metal container called a tiger warmer much like a pen with a refill. The end of the moxa is lighted and the heat is transferred from the moxa to the skin using the warmer. This reduces the chances of burning the skin.
- Rice Moxa: Rice moxa or rice grain moxa is a Japanese method where a small piece of fluffy moxa, the size of a rice grain (hence the name) is placed on the skin at the acupuncture points and burnt. The heat is transferred quickly and instantly fades. This method is very effective in addressing chronic fatigue, tiredness, and weakness.
