Cupping

Cupping is an ancient healing technique that’s been used for thousands of years. It’s a form of alternative medicine that can complement other treatments or stand on its own. Unlike traditional massage that applies downward pressure, cupping uses suction to gently pull your skin, fascia, and superficial muscle layer upward.

How Does Dry Cupping Work?

At Healing Mantra, Dr. Rama Vasudevan use two types of cups for cupping:

  1. Glass cups: A controlled small fire is placed inside the cup and removed before placing the empty cup on the skin.
  2. Flexible silicone cups: These are simply squeezed and placed on your skin to create suction. This is the most commonly used method at Healing Mantra.

Once in place, the cups create a vacuum effect. This can:

  • Increase blood flow to the area
  • Release tension in your muscles and fascia
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Promote healing and relaxation

What Does Cupping Feel Like?

The patient might feel a tight sensation where the cups are placed, but it shouldn’t be painful. The cups are left in place for about 5-10 minutes, depending on the patient’s comfort level and treatment goals.

After the Treatment

After the cups are removed, the patient will likely see circular marks on your skin. These aren’t bruises! They’re simply areas where blood has been drawn to the surface. These marks are usually painless and typically fade within a few days to a week.

Potential Benefits of Cupping

Cupping is found helpful for issues such as:

  • Back pain
  • Neck tension
  • Headaches
  • Some respiratory conditions

Beyond addressing specific concerns, cupping can also be a great way to de-stress and promote overall well-being.

Is Cupping Right for You?

While cupping can be beneficial for many people, it’s always best to consult with a qualified practitioner before trying any new treatment. We can discuss your specific health concerns and determine if cupping might be a good addition to your wellness routine.

Remember, everyone’s experience with cupping is unique. Some people feel immediate relief, while others might need a series of treatments to see significant benefits. As with any therapeutic approach, consistency often yields the best results.
